How to Start
Maybe I should start cleaning up my life. Start, but with what?
Maybe I’ll chuck out a thin fear that has accrued over the years and cobwebs of guilt
spun silently at night
or maybe I’ll roll up the loneliness that lay inside from wall to wall and clean beneath it
so the floor of my soul will shine again as though it had never been
trod upon.
Or maybe postpone it to another day. After all
it’s still possible to walk here and through the windows, it must be said, there’s still a view
of the world. And moreover, this poem:
The inside thereof inlaid with love.

Portrait
Half his bed is empty not to mention his heart.
His mailbox is full of bills
and nary a love letter.
How much it costs him to live, how much light he wastes, how much water.
He goes out on the balcony
and tree branches scream in all directions.
He looks at the scarred moon’s face.
Half his bed is empty.
And he tosses and turns when he lieth down and when he riseth up
and when he walketh by the way and he is always less and less.

First Thing
I open my eyes in the morning first thing
I look for my body to wear.
It lies where I left it at night,
folded.
It’s been like this for years now. I always find it and I’m always alarmed.

Security Zone
You will be a penniless poet
said the tank commander, and fired a shell. Time froze
planets stood still the night snow flowed.
The shell made its way sparking
the night
into shrapnel of stars.
You will be a penniless poet, said the commander, you’re built for it, you’re a daydreamer,
skinny and quiet.
You will write in a narrow room, with no light, alone you will write, I see you
sitting, bent over the computer, on a colder night than this, between
you and the street is the security zone, a narrow zone,
a deliteralized strip, the poem is the shell’s possible trajectory.

Night Prayer
Let me not be foreclosed, let my place not be searched, let them love
without question, let me not be in debt,
let the roof not leak.
Let me always be able to pay rent and not be afraid and not tremble in every breeze of love
as though it were a wave of pain.
Let me stop
feeling sorry for myself through other people.
Let my appliances not break down and let the light not burn out before I am done

Subterranean
I can’t help it that for me
the surgery succeeded and Baghdad died. And nothing remained
but the music my father
listened to on the embarrassing stations,
as he waited in the underground parking lot to drive me to the people’s army
on his way to work.
And I will never forget
the sadness of his hand fumbling for the Hebrew, to switch quickly, before we drove up and emerged onto the surface.

Night’s Shore
Like a fisherman on the night’s shore I cast a long rod of light
to lure the little poems
at the seabed of my life. I have endless patience,
I have time from now till the world to come. I can sit like this
for years
facing my own reflection waiting for the sun to set.

The Meal
As on every Sabbath
we gather. The doorbell announces the arrivals. There isn’t
more love here than anywhere else. Sometimes strange things
are said. Lying ready on the table are
the knives.
What is not said
has become sharper over time.
What the eye has not seen is sliced by the glances.
The children have sat down on the chairs of the dead.
