Security Zone

You will be a penniless poet
said the tank commander, and fired a shell. Time froze

The shell made its way sparking
the night
into shrapnel of stars.

You will be a penniless poet, said the commander, you’re built for it, you’re a daydreamer,
skinny and quiet.

You will write in a narrow room, with no light, alone you will write, I see you
sitting, bent over the computer, on a colder night than this, between
you and the street is the security zone, a narrow zone,
a deliteralized strip, the poem is the shell’s possible trajectory.
